A small detour for your puzzle habit
Enjoy a daily puzzle and fancy a subject beyond spelling or vocabulary? Meanwhile gives you ten historical events and asks you to match five pairs that happened in the same year.
A sporting milestone can share a year with a discovery. Their subjects don’t have to match; the calendar does. It’s a different way to rummage through what you know.
Five pairs. Plenty of room for a hunch.
Read the ten cards and connect any two events to make a pair. Make five pairs, then lock them in. Correct matches stay; incorrect ones give you another chance to reconsider.
You don’t type a year. Knowing a broad period can still help you rule out an unlikely partner. Read the exact milestone too: a first publication and a later adaptation might live decades apart.
1872
A national park meets a fictional itinerary
Here’s an independent example: Yellowstone became a national park in 1872, the same year Around the World in Eighty Days appeared as a newspaper serial. Its book edition arrived the following year.
One familiar event can give you an anchor for something less familiar. Suddenly two separate stories have a shared address in your head.
Pick a subject your brain wants to visit
Meanwhile suits curiosity about history and culture. Prefer quantities to dates? Ballpark asks which GDP is larger and by how much. Counterweight asks you to combine three economies toward a target.
Try one board. Finish a puzzle, pocket an unexpected connection, and see whether you want another visit. A daily ritual can be small and still send you down a very good rabbit hole.
But doesn’t the novel belong to 1873?
Its book edition does. The newspaper serial appeared in 1872, which is the milestone in this independent pairing.
That one word—serial—does useful work. Meanwhile asks you to match the event described, not every stage of the story.
Follow the rabbit holes
The dates and details have receipts. Here’s where to wander next.
